Located in the northwest of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was founded on May 3, 1494, and has been the capital of the Canary Islands since 1833. Presently, it shares that title with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Furthermore, it is the most populated island in the Canaries and Spain.

Tenerife's carnival has been declared an International Tourist Interest Festival and is considered one of the most famous in the world. So, if you have the chance to visit in February, you'll undoubtedly enjoy it like a true Tenerife local.

Explore Plaza de España

Our city tour begins at Plaza de España, the heart of the Canary Islands' capital and one of the must-visit places in Santa Cruz.

Within this plaza, sharing the same name as the one in Seville, you'll find the famous "Santa Cruz de Tenerife" sign, the monument to those fallen in the Civil War, and the tourist information office.

Plaza de España spans over 500 square meters, making it the largest plaza in the Canary Islands.

Built in 1929 atop the San Cristóbal Castle, some of its walls can be visited in the underground gallery beneath the plaza.

San Cristóbal Castle was one of Tenerife's initial defensive fortresses, constructed in the 16th century.

Among the ruins that can be explored in the underground gallery, a cannon stands out, rumored to have caused Nelson to lose his arm during his attempt to conquer the island.

Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Church

Venturing into the streets of the old town, which we believe are the most beautiful in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you'll find the Church of the Concepción.

Popularly known as the "cathedral of Tenerife," this church was the island's first Catholic temple. Built at the end of the 15th century, the building has endured several fires throughout its history. Its latest restoration took place in the late 18th century.

Its architecture is a blend of Baroque and Tuscan styles, featuring volcanic stone.

Purchase Canary Products at the Nuestra Señora de África Market

One of the most peculiar buildings to see in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the Nuestra Señora de África Market, whose architectural style bears resemblance to the medinas found in Morocco. Also known as "La Recova," this market was constructed in the mid-20th century.

It's a food market where you'll find delightful Canary products, among other items. If you plan to visit, note that it is only open in the mornings.
