Explore the unique charm of Tenerife's first city, San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Serving as the island's initial capital, it houses unique monuments and museums.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna stands as Tenerife's largest city and the only one declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in 1497 by the adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo, this historic town was strategically placed inland to evade coastal pirate attacks, thereby becoming Tenerife's inaugural capital and the hub of island authority.

A visit to La Laguna is a journey back to Tenerife's most splendid historical era. Its meticulously aligned cobblestone streets served as a blueprint for urban design in colonial American cities. La Laguna has retained its original 15th-century layout.

In 1927, the first university in the Canary Islands was established in La Laguna. Since then, the city has been characterized by its youthful university atmosphere.

Despite the capital's move to Santa Cruz in 1833, La Laguna's development has been unstoppable. Today, it hosts numerous palatial buildings, shops, restaurants, and Tenerife Norte Airport.
